Abstract

The potential of biological degradation of refinery spent caustic is evaluated in this study, including effects of operating parameters such as pH of influent stream, salinity, and air flowrate on the biotreatment of the spent caustic process. The results show that the sequence batch reactor process by using domesticated activated sludge has an effective biodegradability on refinery spent caustic. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency reached above 80% with an initial COD value of 1000 mg/L, and the degradation rate of sulfide was over 95%. Meanwhile the organic components of the spent caustic were completely biodegraded within one cycle time.
