Abstract
The Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) is the new official regulator of postgraduate medical education. It aims to be innovative, to improve quality and to work in a collaborative way with the royal colleges, postgraduate deans and others. PMETB intends to introduce some flexibility in curricula and will be asking colleges and specialist advisory committees (SACs) to look at ways of supporting academic surgical careers. PMETB is an opportunity for the colleges to test and introduce innovative ways of assessing competencies in the workplace.
