Abstract

Summary A brief description of the dorsal part of the pterothoracic skeleton and musculature of the adult Locusta migratoria migratorioides is given and the chief differences between them and the corresponding parts of the instars are described. The presence of two histologically different types of muscles in the instars is reported and their probable significance is discussed. Tergo‐pleural muscles which are present only in the nymphs and young adults are described and their possible function in moulting is discussed.
