Abstract
In many developing nations, there is a relationship between the variables which affect a the duration of a trip, from departure to arrival, with the mode of transport used. A few issues must be taken into account in order to reduce travel time to the maximum. A trip is considered green if it adopts green transportation strategies and green modes of transportation are used, for example walking, cycling, or taking a public transport. This paper provides an outline for possible directions of future research. It presents a brief introduction to expert systems and elucidates the role played by technology in the latest approaches in transportation engineering. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the latest findings of researches related to the engineering processes, development, and implementation of an expert scheme in a green transportation system. The current expert system does not meet the requirements set for a green transportation system. Moreover, the paper highlights the need to develop an expert system for a green transportation. This system would enable performance engineers to determine, analyze, and customize information which would be helpful to relevant parties during the decision-making processes. Lastly, several recommendations are presented for improving the existing expert system in transportation and developing a framework for an expert system for green transportation.
