Abstract

Muoxyalkyl radicals (R2C•—O—Mu) were observed by transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-μSR) spectroscopy during irradiation of liquid compounds containing different carbonyl functions (aldehyde, ketone, ester, amide, anhydride) with spin-polarized positive muons. These radicals may be viewed asformal adducts of the light hydrogen isotope muonium (μ+e−) arising from its addition to the oxygen atom of the CξO bond: C•—O—Mu. Comparison is made with the related protium analogues, C•—O—H.
