Abstract

The standing position of the United Nations (UN) toward war in Iraq was clearly stated by its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan: “If the United States and others were to go outside U.N. Security Council and take unilateral action they would not be in conformity with the Charter.” The Charter allows nations to take military action only with Security Council approval. The United States opted for taking military action against a UN member state without the council’s approval.1KeywordsUnited NationsSecurity CouncilMilitary ActionTransitional GovernmentSecurity Council ResolutionThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
