The position of urban allotment gardens within the urban fabric

Abstract

This chapter presents an understanding of the position of allotment and community gardens within the urban fabric. It provides insights into the diversity of their location in the urban context and their relationship to other spatial configurations such as other green spaces and the built environment. The chapter considers the image and perception and the reciprocal impact of these gardens on the urban landscape and its people. It explores the role of allotment and community gardens in the green infrastructure, the main functions they deliver, the level of connectivity to the existing network of green spaces and accessibility for the residents. Food production is linked to the history of cities since their origins. New forms of allotments are emerging in many different ways and expressions, and are occupying a diversity of places in cities across Europe. The position of allotment gardens across Europe and their integration in the urban context is as diverse as their location, function and image.
