Abstract

This research seeks to employ the polyphonic approach that pertains to the novel in studying the poetic text after it expanded and became a fertile field that could be manifested in poetry. Due to this expansion, the elements of this approach have been applied to the poetic text as a literary discourse that has a narrative nature. The “Ra’eyah” poem of ‘Umar ibn Abi Rabi‘ah has been chosen for study in this research because it is considered to be an accurate model of the polyphonic poem that includes all the elements of polyphonic discourse represented by the multiplicity of voices and characters, dialogism, and spacetime, in addition to other elements that are characterized by novelty and innovation such as carnival atmosphere, parody, composition, and hybridization. Through the polyphonic approach, the research aims to apply these elements to the poem of ‘Umar ibn Abi Rabi‘ah to prove that it transcended the monophonic voice and lyricism to the realm of drama and polyphonyristians.
