Abstract

I have more questions than answers, questions that have been in play for Indian scholars since before Indian scholars (by white standards) existed. The answers— well, they will determine what it means to be an American Indian in the 21st century. We knew what it meant in the 19th; the 20th has been very confusing. European technology and numbers, and our own lack of unity, doomed our ability to wage a defensive war. Since then, we have been questioning how to wage a defensive peace.
