Abstract

English Baptists viewed Scotland as a prime mission field from the early 1650s. Prominent Baptists such as Colonel Robert Lilburne, Commander-in-Chief of Cromwell’s forces in Scotland, did all they could to promote their cause. English Baptist congregations were formed, which included some Scottish converts. However, an indigenous Baptist infrastructure was never established. The churches did not survive the removal of English leadership following allegations of Baptist plots against Cromwell.
