Abstract

Chapter seven analyses the social and political activities around Awakening. First it discusses its engagement in charity initiatives. Then it discusses in detail the politics of Maher Zain’s song “Palestine will be Free” from his debut album. It discusses the lyrics, recording, production, music video and performances of the song to understand the political work of Awakening. The chapter first uses the concepts movement artist and post-Islamism to try to pin down how to describe Awakening artists. However, the concepts are not sufficient and too tied to social movement theories; instead a new concept “ethical Islamic empowerment discourse” is launched to better capture the activities of Awakening. To argue for the usefulness of this concept, the chapter looks into Hamza Namira’s political songs, Maher Zain’s concerts and Awakening’s engagement in the highly successful Canadian Islamic conference “Reviving the Islamic Spirit”, a meeting place for Islamic intellectuals from all over the world and from many different traditions.
