Abstract

This chapter explores if what I found in Apartadó reflects a more general pattern in Colombia by testing if municipalities with more UP voters suffered more displacement. In a cross-sectional analysis of displacement between 1998 and 2006, I find that even accounting for levels of violence perpetrated by the armed groups, displacement from municipalities with UP support was higher than from those without. It was only after traveling to the Urabá region, interviewing residents there, and combing local archives, that the overlooked form of displacement in non-ethnic settings - political cleansing - became apparent. Once I developed the theory, I collected new data on political representation across Colombia to test the implications of the theory on a larger scale.
