Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this chapter is to explore the impact of institutions on party-based Euroscepticism in Europe and to assess whether one can posit a causal relationship at the aggregate level between certain institutions as independent variables and the presence and/or relative strength of party-based Euroscepticism as the dependent variable. Beyond that, it has three secondary objectives. First, to operationalize the concept of ‘political opportunity structures ‘ (or POS; Kitschelt 1986; Tarrow 1994) within a framework of institutional theory.
