Abstract

This paper examines the political ideal of toleration in the work of Samuel Pufendorf, John Locke and John Rawls. The paper contrasts a non-liberal conception of toleration with a liberal conception of toleration. The paper was originally given as a lecture and provides an introduction to thinking about the political ideal of toleration.
