Abstract

THE development of the political economy of socialism owes much to Polish economists, whose scholarly contributions are internationally known. From many viewpoints, however, textbooks for schools and university courses are more significant and informative than the best specialist monographs and scientific papers; they give perhaps the best view of the general level of economic education, the received wisdom in sensitive areas, the current planning techniques in use, and the political attitudes of the leadership. Seven major textbooks are examined and compared in this article, by Mine, Wakar, Brus, Pohorille, Szefler, Timofiejuk and Nasilowski (listed here in chronological order). With the exception of Mine's volume they were all prepared by a team, but throughout this article books and citations are given by editor, not individual contributors.
