Abstract

Of the four major integration schemes with some degree of official status, two have been in actual operation for some years: the Central American Common Market (CACM) since 1960, and the Latin American Free Trade Association (LAFTA) since 1961. Costa Rica, E1 Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua make up the CACM, while LAFTA now encompasses eleven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay being the charter members and Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Venezuela later adherents. The other two comprehensive schemes, one for a common market of Andean countries and the other for a common market embracing all Latin America (Cuba presumably excluded) are at this writing (October, 1968) still only in the planning and discussion phase.
