Abstract

The origins, development, collections and activities of the Polish Library in Paris and the two main Polish libraries in London are described. They were founded to preserve important records of Polish cultural life, to build up a nucleus of books which could be used in Poland itself, to record émigré publications and to serve the cultural and national needs of the Polish community. Today, the libraries aim to serve the information and research needs of those interested in Polish affairs. The chief similarity between them is seen to be their moral significance, as repositories of books on all subjects and shades of opinion which have been banned or censored or for various reasons cannot be published in Poland.
