Abstract
The great futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov (1885–1922), more renowned than read today, was a key protagonist in the artistic and political revolt that was the Russian avant-garde. Known to connoisseurs of Russian literature as one of the principal innovators of Russian poetic language, Velimir Khlebnikov was also hailed during his own life, if only by his fellow futurists, as the King of Time. For Khlebnikov’s written legacy embraces more than his literary production: in his collected works, alongside some of the most startling verse in the Russian language, we find page upon page of mathematical formulae, algebraic equations that are presented to us as the foundations of a precise science of history.
