Abstract

Parallel striations and polygonal cracks are recorded in the highlands of the Republic of Yemen. The cracks are similar to those found in the present tundra and subarctic regions, and belong to contraction-crack polygons which are formed due to a decrease in volume. They occur in both the sandstones of the Souq Member, Affar Formation (Early Jurassic), and the pyroclastics of the Yemen Volcanics (Tertiary), whereas the occurrence of the striations is restricted to the pyroclastics. Such features are interpreted as an indication of continental glaciation, and that Yemen was affected by the Pleistocene glacial episode, most probably during the latest Würm Glaciation.
