Abstract

Plasmodium vaughani Novy and MacNeal, 1904, Plasmodium tenue Laveran and Marullaz, 1914, and Plasmodium merulae Corradetti and Scanga, 1972 are shown to differ. It is suggested that P. tenue and P. merulae should be considered as subspecies belonging to Plasmodium vaughani-complex. More investigations are needed for a sufficient knowledge of the complex, particularly because at least 36 species of birds harbor P. vaughani-like parasites and cover an immense geographical area in all the parts of the world.
