Abstract

Using a previously published slip-line field theory, applicable to work-hardening solids, and the measurements published by Farmer and Oxley, a formula is developed for the force required to extrude a work-hardening solid through a wedge-shaped die. The extrusion force calculated, by means of this formula, for the samples used by Farmer and Oxley, equals 7.4 kN, which lies close to the measured force of 7.5 kN. Farmer and Oxley claim to have eliminated friction in the die, so the result confirms the rule of work-hardening from which it is derived.
