Abstract

Summary Because trees are counter elements to buildings, planners like to include them in drawings, plans and proposals for new developments. The pace of recent urban built environmental change has also accorded trees a special place as a link with the countryside. Conservation of these natural elements is now a recognised planning policy and tree preservation orders reflect this concern. However, whilst planners are familiar with the town as a social entity, they remain generally unaware of the life cycle of the tree. Urban forestry could well provide a structured context for a better appreciation by planners and others of the place of trees in towns.
