Abstract

Selective decontamination of the digestive tract means the abolition of the oropharyngeal and gastrointestinal carriage of only disease-causing microorganisms. The abolition of the carrier state by topical, non-absorbable antimicrobials (polymyxin E, tobramycin, amphotericin B) is associated with clinical (prevention of secondary endogenous infections), bacteriological (control of resistance) and epidemiological (outbreak control) benefits. The 22 trials published so far are reviewed and discussed.
