Abstract

In the study, contributions of river type power plants to Turkey’s hydroelectric production is examined. This type of power plants, mostly used on smaller rivers, is expected to be more important in the near future because of increase of national electricity demand. So, working conditions and establishing possibilities of these power plants on Turkey’s rivers are needed to be determined. This study aims to contribute this subject as a geographical point of viev. Evaluation of data, firstly, statistics of EIE, DSI and many other instutions are used. While examining economical and technical point of this subject, the data of Esendurak Hydroelectric Power Plant Project, planned to establish on Tortum river, are used. According to our findings, there is an important hydroelectric potential as a river type power plants on the Mediterranean and Blacksea basins. A twenty percent of Turkey hydroelectric potential can be transformed into production by the help of this type power plants. In spite of this, the rate of production of the 62 river type plants power in hydroelecric production is % 12 and also the rate of in the potential that can be utilized economically is % 2.4. Basically, to increase these proportions with new investmennts is possible. This is also another way of reducing dependence on exterior in energy production and meeting national electric demand which increasing time by time.
