Abstract

rT HE standards of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business require 40 per cent of cultural work for the Bachelor's degree with another 20 per cent optional. Opinions as to the place of foreign languages in this program vary. Practice in the member schools ranges from a requirement of four units of entrance credits plus twelve semester hours of college credit to nothing at all. In between are those which require only entrance credits, or credits obtained in either preparat6ry school or college, or one or two years of college credit. Thirteen schools require college work.-Columbia, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Syracuse, Tulane, Virginia, Washington and Lee, and Wisconsin require two years of college work. New York's requirement is for the Bachelor of Science degree; if the degree of Bachelor of Commercial Science is sought, no foreign language is required. Tulane stipulates that the work must be in commercial Spanish. North Carolina's requirement is the heaviest because it follows four units of preparatory study. Wisconsin recommends four units for the Bachelor of Arts degree. The usual student in Alabama probably takes two years of college work, but if he enters with three or four units of foreign language he needs to offer but one year of college work in satisfaction of the requirement. Boston, Georgia Tech, and Missouri require one year of college work. Two units of high-school work is usually required as preparation. Missouri specifies three units as required, while Pennsylvania states that its college work is not elementary. It is likely that students in Indiana and Iowa take college work in foreign languages, but the requirement as stated places both of these institutions in the optional requirement class. Seven schools require either high-school or college work.-If a Freshman at Indiana or Iowa enters with credit for four units of foreign language, no further languages are required. If he offers two units, one year is required, if less than two units, two years. Ohio State asks for ten tetm hours unless at least two units are presented for entrance. Chi-
