Abstract

Gastro-intestinal decompression with a nasogastric tube is commonly used in abdominal surgery. It has many advantages, but its prolonged use can be associated with certain problems which should be recognized and have been discussed. The use of a Foley catheter gastrostomy as an alternative is described, and the indications for the use of this procedure are discussed. Three illustrative cases from the writer's personal series of 35 are described.
