Abstract

We evaluate the pion propagator in nuclear matter within the Walecka model, extended to include pions and the Δ-baryon. Both particle-hole and delta-hole contributions are taken into account in random-phase approximation. While ph excitation is suppressed by the smaller nucleon effective mass in nuclear matter, Δh excitation is almost unaffected by the effective nucleon and delta masses. The resulting pion condensate can be removed by the standard Landau-Migdal parameter g′. We also find a strong dependence of our results on the Δ off-shell parameter.
