Abstract
On 10 th October 1998 General Augusto Pinochet was indicted, for human rights violations committed in Chile under his regime, by Spanish magistrate Baltasar Garzon. The author analyses the efforts to bring General Pinochet to justice in Chile, Argentina, Spain, France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Britain and the United States and its implications for international law and human rights. Article based on a public lecture delivered at the IALS on 22 October 2001 by Professor David Sugarman (Law School, Lancaster University and Visiting Senior Research Fellow, IALS) - published in Amicus Curiae - Journal of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and its Society for Advanced Legal Studies.
