Abstract

Mineral oils are being increasingly used as herbicides, and there is little doubt that they could be used more effectively if the phytotoxic properties of any particular fraction could be predicted from knowledge of its physical and chemical properties without the need for extensive testing in the field. This paper reviews some of the work that has been done on the correlation of toxicity with physical and chemical properties of oils, and presents some of the results obtained in an investigation into the toxicity of mineral oils and hydrocarbons to plants, being carried out by the Agricultural Research Council Unit of Experimental Agronomy.
