Abstract

Indices of diversity, coefficient of community and index of affinity values were employed in description of the interstitial algal community (the phytopsammon) pre-sent over a 12-month period in the exposed portion of a fresh-water sandy beach. Coefficient of community and index of affinity data indicated that the beach harbored an algal community different in composition from that of the adjacent lake. Indices of diversity for the algal community present at intervals along the beach transect indicated significant relationship between the phytopsammon community and measures of substrate water content, mean substrate grain size and grain size uniformity coefficients.
