Abstract

Physician Assistants (PAs) are relatively new members of the health care team caring for elderly patients. The profession is rapidly growing, and PAs are uniquely adaptable to respond to the increasing need for the provision of quality healthcare services to the elderly. Physician Assistant scope of practice is derived from state laws; the supervising physician; facility policy and the specific training and experience of the individual PA. Occupational and physical therapy practitioners treating geriatric patients may interact with a PA in various settings and this article presents information regarding the role of the PA within the healthcare system and, specifically, in geriatric medicine and rehabilitation.
