Abstract

Social systems theory provides a frame of reference for understanding interactions between physicians and lawyers. The legal system in any community has its unique boundaries, processing methods, concepts, vocabulary, and ethics, which vary markedly from those of the medical system. Like science, the law is skeptical and employs many procedures to control bias, misperception, self-interest, and skewed judgment. The physician who enters this alien system, for example, as an expert witness in court, must expect to be subjected to complex rules of conduct, the legal concept of truth, fragmentation of functions among many legal agencies and agents, and the adversary method of developing data.
