Abstract

Magnetic and transport properties of RRh 2B 2C compounds with R=Gd, Sm and Nd have been investigated with specific heat, DC magnetization and resistance measurements. The magnetization exhibits two magnetic transitions at T h and T l; the transition at T h is characterized by the appearance of a small ferromagnetic component and the one at T l is an antiferromagnetic ordering of R moments. Not only the specific heat but also the resistance measurements show anomalies owing to the magnetic transitions at T h and T l. These results indicate that the two magnetic transitions are an intrinsic feature of the RRh 2B 2C compounds. Both T h and T l are well scaled by the de Gennes factor over the whole series. This scaling indicates that the two magnetic transitions can be attributed to the RKKY interaction between the localized R moments.
