Abstract

Electronegative plasmas with cold ions show discontinuous parameter dependences (e.g. the addition of an infinitesimal amount of electronegative gas to an otherwise electropositive plasma gives rise to a strongly electronegative core), and very abrupt transitions in spatial structure (e.g. from a strongly electronegative core to a weakly electronegative halo). A simple analytical model is formulated that clarifies the physical and mathematical mechanisms underlying the discontinuous nature of electronegative plasmas. Numerical solutions that support the analytical predictions are also presented.
