Abstract

A re-examination of the terrestrial isopod Tropiscia flagellata Vandel, 1968 is presented. The species is found in the rain forests of Ecuador, one of the most species-rich parts of the world. The phylogenetic position is reconsidered by an analysis of the morphology of the species and further Oniscidea in the light of the Hennigian methodology of outgroup comparison. Tropiscia flagellata appears to be closely related to the South American genus Ischioscia Verhoeff, 1928 rather than to the palearctic genera Philoscia Latreille, 1804 and Chaetophiloscia Verhoeff, 1928: An adelphotaxon relationship of Tropiscia and Ischioscia is proposed herein. The species is redescribed and key characters are figured.
