Abstract

Exposure of plants to strong light leads to photoinhibition of photosynthesis which limits the efficient fixation of light energy in photosynthesis [1]. We have studied the contribution of unsaturation of fatty acids in membrane lipids to the photoinhibition in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 (hereinafter Synechocystis) by genetic manipulation of the unsaturation of fatty acids in membrane lipids [2–4].
