Abstract

Photoelectrochemical studies of spinel in various electrolytes are presented. Comparison is made to its structural analog . Effective stabilization in the aqueous polysulfide electrolyte and ferri/ferrocyanide electrolyte is demonstrated for these n‐type semiconductors. The extent of photocorrosion in several electrolytes is determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. A 1.2% light‐to‐electrical efficiency is shown for the iron hexaquo system but substantial photocorrosion occurs. The presence of a large photocathodic response is attributed to an accumulation space charge layer created under modest cathodic bias.
