Abstract

The object of this paper is to investigate quantitatively the compatibility of the concepts of band structure in the nearly free electron model produced by a pseudo or model potential and the phonon spectra in metals. Thus, using the model potential of Heine and Abarenkov to represent the electron-phonon interaction, the phonon spectra of alkali metals and Al are calculated. We make a comparison with the experiments for Na, K and Al. For the other elements, we compare our results with the sound velocity and atomic specific heat. Good results, especially for K, indicate that the model potential approach is full of promise in this direction.
