Abstract
The philosophical conflicts in collegiate athletics are discussed through analysis of (a) the function of intercollegiate athletics in higher education; (b) historical perspective of NCAA/AIAW; (c) the comparative NCAA/AIAW programs, policies, governance, and administrative structures; (d) the impact of Title IX; and (e) the influence of social and cultural factors upon athletic programs.
