Abstract

The political calm and economic progress that had marked the year in the Philippines came to an abrupt end on the morning of December 1, 1989, when members of the Philippine military attempted a violent overthrow of the Aquino government. When the bloody rebellion finally ended a week later, much of the progress the country had made during 1989 and previous years had been undone. As a result, rather than beginning the new decade with a secure government and an improving economy, Filipinos are faced with a degree of uncertainty reminiscent of the situation in late 1986 and early 1987.
