Abstract

Abstract: What is the state of the Philippine short story in English today and what are its prospects in the next century? There is a general agreement that it is in the field of the short story that Filipino writers excelled from the beginning but they were always conscious of the need to sound different from their American and British models. Today, though the audience for literature in English remains small, and proficiency in English has deteriorated, there are more short stories being written than ever before, and there is a great range in style as well as subject matter. This is largely caused by the legitimizing of creative writing by academe, with the establishment of creative writing programs, courses, workshops, etc. In the future, some writers will probably continue to write in English and Philippine literature in English will continue to enjoy the prestige it does today, simply because English remains the language of power. But there will be increasing attempts to expand the audience for literature, by experimenting with other languages (in combination with English), with more popular art forms like comic books, mystery stories, ghost stories, romance stories, MTV, etc.
