Abstract

This presentation has two-parts. In the first half the Director of IBEHT will discuss the Biomedical Devices Ecosystem in the Philippines. It will also explore a general view on how the field of biomedical engineering evolved in the Philippines, the initiatives and efforts that have been made for it to continue evolving, as well as the factors hindering its advancement. The author will also present the initiatives on biomedical devices innovation and health technologies from different research institutions. The role played by the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA) will be discussed as it sets the overall direction of research thrust and other initiatives relating to healthcare done by the public and private sectors in the Philippines. Additionally, it will also the efforts of the Philippines through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In conclusion, the author will present the De La Salle University – Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies (DLSU-BEHT), a one-stop-shop for information and support infrastructure on biomedical devices innovation and health technologies research in the Philippines and the current research projects will be highlighted. In the second part of the talk the University legal counsel will present 'Intellectual Property as a Tool for Technology Commercialization', from the perspective of the Intellectual Property Office, and Innovation and Technology Office.
