Abstract

The article deals with the main approaches to the interpretation of the morphonological phenomenon of interfixation in Ukrainian linguistics. Different views of linguists on the concept of morphonological modification are considered. The aim of this study is to reveal the intrasystem organization of word formation in the aspect of morphonology, to establish the features of morphological patterns on the example of interfixation. The article gives a detailed analysis of the tendency to use in scientific circulation different terms for designation of word-forming phenomenon of interfixation. The main idea of the article is that the interfixation is a morphonological phenomenon in which, during word formation, between the two morphemes, a sound asemantic insertion appears, eliminating phonemes that contradict the principles of morphonology or are not specific to a particular morphemic structure of the word. The sound pad is characterized by a lack of meaning (that is, it is semantic). Such sound pads may appear by analogy, in the word they perform a purely single function. The article is of great help to understand that quite often, in modern Ukrainian, when creating derivatives of tokens on butt morphemes, regular modifications occur, mainly with the use of interfix insertion. Interfixation is an irregular phenomenon, optional, and usually occurs by analogy. The prospects for further studies of morphonological phenomena in the derivational context are seen in the analysis of other morphonological changes on the material of different parts of the language, including the imposition of morphemes, the abolition of the solid basis, the word-forming alternative.
