Abstract

In accordance with predictions made in previous studies of conglomerate crystallization of coordination compounds, racemic solutions of [ cis-Co(en) 2(NO 2) 2]Br crystallize as a conglomerate (homochiral crystals, space group P2 1), whereas racemic solutions of [cis-α-Co(triethylenetetramine)(NO 2) 2](NO 3)· 1 3 H 2O crystallize as a racemate (heterochiral crystals, space group P2 1 c ). Intra- and intermolecular hydrogen-bonded interactions are shown to control the crystallization pathway these substances select, and the counter anion used is shown to play a role in such selection.
