Abstract

"Abstract: This article attempts to open up the subject of the area of operation proper to Gestalt therapy. If we can view Gestalt therapy as a modality of perception, then we can bring the analysis of Merleau-Ponty to bear on the question and view it in the light of what he has to say about the phenomenal field. This concept embraces what is sometimes called the ‘unconscious’ but in Merleau-Ponty’s view it is the lived body fully present with all its relationships. The phenomenal field as the lived body is part of phenomenology and carries all the richness and promise of what we call ‘field theory’. Key words: lived body, contact, existential, Gestalt, intervention, the kiss of the world, perception."
