Abstract

The phase diagram of the ScCd system has been investigated using differential thermal analysis, metallographic analysis, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The Sc-rich side of the system (0–30 at.% Cd) was not studied owing to the high reactivity and contamination of the samples by the container material (Mo). Three intermediate phases have been found, one of which was not previously known: ScCd (CsCl-type), which shows a wide homogeneity range, ScCd 3 (Ni 3Sn-type) and ScCd 7 (ScCd 7-type), which represents a new structural type. The shape of the diagram on the Sc-rich side takes into account only a few experimental data supported by crystallochemical considerations. The ScCd system differs markedly from the other RCd systems both in the number of the intermediate phases formed and in the crystal structures adopted.
