Abstract

The phase diagram of the Nd-Pd binary system has been determined using a variety of evperimental technivues; metallography, v-ray powder diffraction analysis, electron probe microanalysis and high temperature dilatometry. Four intermetallic phases have been found; NdPd 3 and NdPd which melt congruently, and NdPd 5 and Nd 3Pd which melt peritectically. The alloying behaviour of neodymium with palladium is compared with other platinum-metal-rare-earth systems. The factors affecting the formation of the intermetallic phases are also discussed.
