Abstract
The Director's Forum series is edited by Robert J. Weber and Scott M. Mark and is designed to guide pharmacy leaders in establishing patient-centered services in hospitals and health systems. This article focuses on a portion of the Affordable Care Act called the Accountable Care Organization (ACO). ACOs are expected to reduce costs for Medicare patients by effectively coordinating care through a group approach by various providers. There are specific requirements for an ACO, and there are also opportunities for pharmacists to coordinate care related to medication use. By gaining further understanding of the intricacies the ACO, pharmacists and other health care providers can develop an ACO to maximize the cost and quality of care while expanding patient-centered services.
