Abstract

OXYTO~IC AGENTS are frequently used in modern obsetrical practice, both for the induction and stimulation of labor, as well as for the initiation or completion of abortion and treatment of postpartum uterine atony. Despite the frequent use of these agents, many obstetricians are unaware of some of the physiologic and pharmacologic actions, side effects, and the biologic significances of these agents. The purpose of this review is to familiarize readers with some aspects of the biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, and clinical applications of these drugs. Although attention will be directed predominantly to oxytocin, a neurohypophyseal hormone, some aspects of the pharmacology of other oxytocic drugs will also be discussed. References will be limited to review articles except where this is impossible or where the original paper is of exceptional interest and importance.
