Drug interactions become more likely with the increased use of polypharmacy. Some interactions such as those employed by anesthetists are useful, but others can be dangerous. The pharmacological principles involved are discussed with the aid of diagrams and tables, and the mechanisms of drug interactions are outlined. A brief review of interactions related to anesthesia and surgery is included.
